When it comes to wood construction, water can be the enemy. Wet wood rots, so keep it dry when ever possible. Use treated lumber if you can and preserve it periodically with an oil base sealer or an epoxy coating. When setting posts in concrete, form a fillet just above grade to ensure the wood at post bottom remains out of any surrounding puddle. This will prevent the classic failure of a fence post at its base from rot weakened wood.
